How do we cope with baby colic?

Everyone knows that newborns cry. A lot. Usually, feeding, changing, or rocking the baby helps to calm the fussing. But if a baby has colic, it’s not that simple. “Colic is when a baby cries intensely for three or more hours at a time, usually during the evening hours, on at least three days of the week, for longer than three weeks in a row — for no apparent reason,” says Mary Ann LoFrumento, M.D., author of Simply Parenting: Understanding Your Newborn & Infant.

Colic usually begins around week 2 or 3 of the baby’s life and peaks at around 6 to 8 weeks. Unlike with regular infant crying, attempts to stop colic-induced sob sessions by feeding, burping, rocking, or changing the diaper aren’t successful. If you think your baby has colic, check with her pediatrician to make sure there isn’t something else going on, such as reflux, a string of hair wrapped around Baby’s finger, or an illness. The good news: If it is colic, it’s short-lived, and your pediatrician can also help find ways to help the colic. Colic usually goes away by 2 or 3 months. Until then, these tips can help you maintain your sanity.
So, when your baby is having a bout of crying, just take a deep breath and carry on with the basics. Feed her on demand, wind her and change his/her nappy when she/he needs it. Try the soothing techniques that usually work well for her, whether that be singing to her or taking her for a walk in the pushchair.

Bear in mind that your tried-and-trusted techniques may not work every time. Colic means that, even though your baby is healthy, she/he may just cry for no obvious reason. While this can be stressful, remind yourself that you haven’t done anything wrong, and that this phase will pass.
Dealing with colic can be tough, and some parents feel depressed, helpless and even angry when faced with their persistently crying baby.

If your partner is at home, you could take it in turns to give each other a break. But if you’re alone with your baby, you could:

  • take your baby for a walk so both of you can get some fresh air
  • ask a neighbour or friend to babysit while you have a bath or lie down in a quiet room
  • phone a close relative or friend to talk about what you’re going through
  • cuddle and rock your baby, but put on headphones and listen to happy music, so that the only sound you hear isn’t your baby’s crying
  • If you can’t get out of the house, do some exercise or dance to a games console or DVD

If the tension mounts to the point where your stress turns to anger, put your baby down in her cot for five minutes and go into a different room to calm yourself. The last thing you want to do is to direct that anger towards your baby. If you need to, set a timer so you know how long it’s been.

When your baby is calmer:

  • Have a rest, or some “me time”, while your baby is sleeping.
  • Listen to a relaxation podcast.
  • Enjoy your baby by making a note of the good times you have together.
  • Talk to your partner about how you’re both coping and what you can do.
  • Chat with other mums who have babies with colic

If you’re struggling, it’s important to seek help before you become overwhelmed. If you become anxious, your baby may pick up on this, making her more difficult to soothe. Don’t be afraid to contact a doula if your need help!

But I Have Lots of Family in the Area—Do I Need a Doula?

The answer to that question probably depends on your family and the level of support and care they offer you. Not everyone has a mother they can trust to come over, pitch in and help out—without the added commentary on how she’d do it differently if she were you.

One of the things new parents most appreciate about doulas is the complete lack of pretense—the doula is there to help you and support you in doing what you are doing, not to change it up and impose her system.

Because your doula doesn’t have an emotional investment in the way you desire to parent your newborn, she’s a help to the process, rather than a hurdle.But doulas aren’t just for women with especially vocal mothers and mothers-in-law.

Maybe you’d rather let mom do the fun grandma things like helping to entertain your visitors and taking care of siblings, and then let your doula handle the night shift. Doulas don’t usurp the role of family members in supporting a mother at this special time—rather they are advocates, making sure mom’s needs get handled in the midst of the new baby hubbub.

5 Things Not to Say to a Woman Who Just Gave Birth

The days following birth are often a collision of mixed emotions- overwhelming love, joy, excitement, anticipation and even fear, can flood a new mom’s mind and heart. We are a walking emotional contradiction, and for good reason, birth is an enormously life changing event.

Here are some of the phrases I’ve found least likely to please a new mom, avoid them!

Are you going to have another baby?

I have heard asked this question hours after a first child had excite of the mother’s body. A woman that has just given birth does not want to think about going through it again immediately. She’s wrapped up in every emotion that has ever been in existence, and wants to be the best mother that she can be to THIS baby. Another baby is not what she wants to think about in these fresh, first moments after giving birth. Asking about her future family plans can wait, and it’s best to focus on the sweet baby she’s just brought into the world.

Breastfeeding is difficult

Breastfeeding might be difficult. If you choose to breastfeed your baby, be prepared for a little bit of work. Not everybody has a smooth ride and it can be anything the soft, bonding vignettes they plaster all over “Breast is Best” pamphlets. The good news is once you’re over the hump it’s pretty maintenance free and you can never forget your baby’s lunch on the counter. If you have an easy time of it, awesome!

My labour was much better / worse

No one likes a “one-upper” and you gain nothing by trying to do so. You can share your story too if you are all talking about birth, but don’t be that person

I Had My Baby “Naturally”

Again, this is one of those comments that is better left not being uttered, even under your breath. Whether a woman had a baby vaginally, via C-section, or through her ear–she doesn’t need to hear that you have done it “naturally.” Unless you are empathizing with a new mom who is suffering the aftermath that comes with vaginal birth or offering helpful tips for recovery, it’s best to just stay mum on the topic of your own experience.

You still look pregnant!

No kidding. After growing a baby for nine months, things don’t just shrink back to normal in a matter of days—it takes time. Meanwhile, mom doesn’t need to be told that even after giving birth, it doesn’t look like much has changed.

¿Cómo funcionan los hipopresivos?

La musculatura de la faja abdominal y del suelo pélvico está diseñada para ejercer de sostén de los órganos situados en la cavidad que envuelven. En la vida cotidiana se producen constantes aumentos de la presión abdominal: al toser, gritar, reír, cantar, cargar pesos, mantener relaciones sexuales, practicar deporte, etc. Debido a estos y otros factores, como la inactividad, los embarazos o la menopausia, esta faja abdominal y la musculatura perineal pueden verse afectadas y dejar de realizar correctamente sus funciones de sujeción.

Con los ejercicios hipopresivos podemos devolver esta función reprogramando la respuesta muscular ante las situaciones de aumentos de presión del día a día. ¿Cómo? Mediante un incremento del tono muscular en reposo, es decir, de la contracción muscular que se realiza de forma involuntaria y sostenida en el tiempo. Asimismo, se puede mejorar la respuesta muscular ante los aumentos de presión puntuales, ya que incrementa el soporte central ante las actividades que demandan fuerza.

Los beneficios más destacados que nos ofrece esta técnica en las mujeres que acaban de dar a luz son:

Having a Baby in Barcelona

If you are having a baby in Barcelona there are some things you need for you postpartum and the legal/professional life.

How to register your baby’s birth in Barcelona?

During 2017 some hospital offer to register your baby directly in the hospital, so you don’t need to go to the “Registro Civil”. They will give you a document call Cuestionario para la Declaración de Nacimiento en el Registro Civil. Make your baby’s name is correct!! This document is signed by the doctor or the midwife that was with you during the delivery.

In case your hospital doesn’t offer this service you must register your baby at the local Civil Registry Office (Registro Civil) within eight days of the birth. You can go directly to Plaça del Duc de Medinaceli, 3. If your married only one of the parents needs to go, but if you are not married then both parents must attend the registry office

If you intend to apply for a non-Spanish passport for your baby, remember to ask for a full birth certificate (certificación literal). In addition to the documentation provided by the hospital, you must also bring any national insurance documents belonging to the parents and a marriage certificate, which must be officially translated into Spanish. Don’t forget to bring your passports and identity cards (and copies), in case they are required to verify your identity.

Maternity and paternity Leave: do you qualify?

Maternity benefits are paid by Seguridad Social, the Spanish Social Security System. To qualify have a maternity/paternity leave you must have paid contributions for at least 180 days in the last seven years if you are 26 or older with certain exceptions, for example, those aged 21–25 qualify in fewer days and women under 21 have no contribution period. Maternity benefits are also available to self-employed women, provided they are registered in the Spanish social security system for the self-employed. You apply through your local social security office, they will let you know which documents you need to fill, basically you need to bring the Birth Certificate, el “Libro de familia” (they will give it to you at el Registro)

Maternity and paternity leave can be taken part-time if an arrangement has been made with the employer ahead of the birth. In the case of patenity leave, a part-time day must be no less than 50 percent of the full-time workday. In the case of a birth (versus an adoption), the mother cannot avail of part-time maternity leave until after the mandatory six-week, full-time maternity leave period after the delivery.

Extended maternity leave is also available for women who cannot perform their job because it puts their pregnancy at risk. Extended benefits are also offered to breastfeeding mothers if their job prevents them to nurse.

Trobada prematurs 17 i 19 Novembre 2016

l‘Associació de Prematurs de l’Hospital Clínic-Maternitat (ASPREM-HCM), es vestirà de lila per celebrar el dia mundial del Prematur acompanyats de les famílies dels nens prematurs i dels professionals de l’àmbit sanitari de la unitat de neonatologia.

El proper dijous 17 de novembre, Dia Mundial del Prematur, la Maternitat de l’Hospital Clínic acollirà, tal i com ja es va fer l’any anterior, la tradicional penjada de mitjonets, acte emmarcat dins la campanya a nivell mundial “Socks for Life” per donar el tret de sortida d’aquest dia tan assenyalat per ells. A continuació s’oferirà un esmorzar per a les famílies assistents i l’acte finalitzarà amb la lectura d’un manifest i l’enlairada de globus dedicada a tots aquells prematurs que ja no estan entre nosaltres.

I el dissabte 19 de novembre, no falteu a la Festa del Prematur que faran conjuntament amb altres associacions, per tal de celebrar plegats el dia del prematur.

Serà a Esplugues de Llobregat, al poliesportiu Parc Pou de Can Fèlix, entre les 10 i les 14h.

Es tracta d’un acte lúdic, on hi haurà actuacions, animació infantil, mercat de 2a mà de productes infantils, expositors d’empreses relacionades amb la prematuritat i estands informatius de les diferents associacions de prematurs de Catalunya, que participen a la festa d’aquest any.

CAMPUS FOR MOMS, ¿lo conoces?

El próximo 13 de octubre empiezan las clases del “Campus for Moms”, lo conoces?

¿A quién va dirigido? Buscan emprendedoras que estén montando negocios vinculados a la tecnología: web, internet, apps y otras y que quieran formarse para lanzarse en ello.

¿Cuál es su contenido? Campus for Moms se divide en ocho sesiones, una cada semana, que abarcan todos los temas a los que se enfrentan las emprendedoras: diseño de producto, finanzas, legal, imagen, marketing, etc. Cada una de ellas se divide a su vez en bloques con pausas para facilitar la atención a los bebés.

¿Quién puede participar? Campus for Moms está orientado en primer lugar a madres con bebés (y padres). Las mujeres -y hombres- sin hijos también pueden participar, pero su inscripción estará supeditada a la existencia de plazas, las cuales son limitadas.

¿Niños de todas las edades? Las clases están pensadas para participar con bebés de entre 0 y 1 año.

¿Cuánto cuesta? Campus for Moms no tiene ningún coste para los participantes. Lo único que se requiere es un compromiso de asistencia a todas las sesiones.

Características: Las salas donde se imparte el curso están pensadas para asistir con bebés de entre 0 y 1 año: tiene colchonetas, un cambiador, moqueta, etc. Y los ponentes son conscientes que las madres deben atender a sus bebés.

¿Dónde se hace? En Madrid. En Impact HUB Madrid, un espacio dedicado a la innovación en el corazón del Barrio de las Letras.
